Paramagnetic Instability at Normal-Metal–Superconductor Interfaces
We study the proximity coherence in a mesoscopic normal-metal film in contact with a superconductor. Accounting for a repulsive interaction between the electrons in the normal metal, we find an enhanced local density of states close to the normal-metal–superconductor interface. The sharp peak in the density is pinned to the Fermi energy and leads to spontaneous paramagnetic interface currents. ...

متن کاملA New H2o Ice Hugoniot: Implications for Planetary Impact Events
Collisions on icy planetary bodies produce impact melt water, redistribute ground ice, and deposit thermal energy available for chemical reactions. The amount of melt generated from an impact is sensitive to the initial temperature, which ranges from the 273 K on Earth and Mars to 40 K on the surface of Pluto. Previous shock wave studies, centered at ~263 K for terrestrial applications, had dif...
متن کاملAn hydrodynamic shear instability in stratified disks
We discuss the possibility that astrophysical accretion disks are dynamically unstable to nonaxisymmetric disturbances with characteristic scales much smaller than the vertical scale height. The instability is studied using three methods: one based on the energy integral, which allows the determination of a sufficient condition of stability, one using a WKB approach, which allows the determinat...
متن کاملEnergy Gradient Theory of Hydrodynamic Instability
A new universal theory for flow instability and turbulent transition is proposed in this study. Flow instability and turbulence transition have been challenging subjects for fluid dynamics for a century. The critical condition of turbulent transition from theory and experiments differs largely from each other for Poiseuille flows. This enigma has not been clarified so far owing to the difficult...
